Getting added to an unfamiliar WhatsApp group without your permission can be frustrating, particularly when you are busy at work, relaxing at home or trying to avoid unnecessary notifications.
The situation can also raise privacy concerns, especially when people you do not know have access to your phone number and can add you to conversations without first asking.
Fortunately, WhatsApp has a privacy feature that gives users greater control over who can add them to groups. Instead of allowing anyone with your phone number to include you in a group, you can restrict the permission to people saved in your contacts or prevent selected individuals from adding you.
The setting is easy to change and takes only a few steps on your smartphone.
Who can add you to WhatsApp groups?
WhatsApp's group privacy setting offers three options that determine who can directly add you to a group.
By default, the setting is configured to Everyone, meaning anyone who has your phone number can add you to a WhatsApp group, even if you have not saved their contact.
However, you can change this option to suit your privacy preferences.

Here is what each setting means:
1. Everyone
When this option is selected, anyone with your phone number can add you directly to a WhatsApp group without needing your approval.
2. My contacts
This option limits group invitations to people whose phone numbers are saved in your address book.
If someone who is not in your contacts tries to add you, WhatsApp will prompt them to send you a private group invitation instead. You can then decide whether to join.
The invitation expires after three days if you do not accept it.

3. My contacts except...
This option gives you more control by allowing you to select specific people in your contact list who cannot add you directly to groups.
If an excluded contact attempts to add you, they can send a private invitation through an individual chat. You can choose whether to accept it, and the invitation expires after three days.
How to stop unknown people from adding you to WhatsApp groups
If you want to prevent strangers from adding you to WhatsApp groups without permission, follow these steps:
Open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
On Android, tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner and select Settings. On iPhone, open the Settings tab.
Select Privacy.
Tap Groups.
Choose My contacts to allow only saved contacts to add you directly.
Alternatively, select My contacts except... to exclude specific people.
If you choose the second option, select the contacts you want to prevent from adding you and tap Done if prompted.
Once you update the setting, people outside your permitted list will no longer be able to add you directly to new groups.
What happens if someone sends you a WhatsApp group invitation?
Changing your group privacy settings does not mean you will never receive group invitations.
When someone who is not permitted to add you directly wants you to join a group, WhatsApp may allow them to send a private invitation instead.
You can review the invitation and decide whether to join. You are not automatically enrolled in the group simply because someone sends you an invitation.
It is also important to understand that these privacy settings apply to new group additions. Leaving an unwanted group does not automatically prevent someone from adding you to another group later.
If a particular person repeatedly sends unwanted invitations or messages, you can exclude them through the My Contacts except... option or block them on WhatsApp.
Blocking a contact also prevents other forms of communication from that person.
Can you change WhatsApp group privacy settings on a computer?
WhatsApp's group privacy settings must be changed through the mobile application.
You cannot directly update this particular setting through WhatsApp Web or the desktop application. However, after changing it on your smartphone, the updated privacy preference also applies when you use WhatsApp on linked devices.
There is also an exception worth knowing: these group privacy settings do not apply to Community Announcements, where members are automatically included as part of the community structure.
