When people talk about a "strong" currency, they usually mean how much of it you need to get one US dollar. The fewer units it takes, the higher it ranks. By that measure, here are the ten strongest currencies in Africa this October.
One quick note: exchange rates move daily, so the figures below are approximate.
1. Tunisian Dinar (TND): about 2.96 per USD
Tunisia takes the top spot. The dinar is tightly managed by the Central Bank of Tunisia, which helps keep it high on the list even though the country has faced economic pressure in recent years.
2. Libyan Dinar (LYD): about 6.39 per USD
Libya's dinar ranks second on paper, backed by the country's huge oil wealth. Official and parallel market rates can differ, so the ranking reflects the official figure.

3. Moroccan Dirham (MAD): about 9.63 per USD
Morocco's dirham is pegged to a basket of currencies, which keeps it stable. It is one of the most steady currencies on the continent, helped by tourism, phosphates, and a growing manufacturing sector.
4. Ghanaian Cedi (GHS): about 11.63 per USD
Ghana lands in fourth place, ahead of several bigger economies. For a currency that has been through heavy pressure in recent years, that is a notable spot. Cedi strength matters in everyday life, from the price of imported goods and fuel to the cost of doing business. The next question is whether it can hold this position.
5. Botswana Pula (BWP): about 13.67 per USD
Botswana's pula is backed by diamond revenue and a reputation for careful economic management, which is why it consistently ranks among Africa's strongest currencies.

6. Seychellois Rupee (SCR): about 13.82 per USD
The island nation's currency is driven largely by tourism and fishing. It sits just behind the pula this month.
7. Eritrean Nakfa (ERN): about 15.00 per USD
The nakfa is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate, so it barely moves. That fixed rate is the reason it ranks seventh.
8. South African Rand (ZAR): about 16.41 per USD
The rand comes from Africa's most industrialized economy and is the continent's most widely traded currency. It is also known for swinging with global markets and local politics.

9. Swazi Lilangeni (SZL): about 16.42 per USD
Eswatini's lilangeni is pegged one-to-one with the South African rand, so it moves almost exactly in step with it.
10. Namibian Dollar (NAD): about 16.43 per USD
Namibia's dollar completes the top ten. Like the lilangeni, it is pegged to the rand, which explains why the three sit so close together.
What this ranking tells us
A few things stand out. Several of these currencies are pegged or tightly managed, so their position reflects policy as much as market strength. The rand, lilangeni, and Namibian dollar are practically linked, which is why they cluster at the bottom of the list. And a low exchange rate does not automatically mean a stronger economy. Nigeria and Egypt, for example, have much larger economies than several countries on this list.
Still, the ranking is a useful snapshot. For Ghana, finishing fourth in Africa is a good sign, and the focus now shifts to keeping that stability going.
